Although nowadays this Dog breed is spreaded all over the world, the truth about the Caucasian Ovcharka Mountain Dog History takes us to a peculiar region on the planet where these Dogs were originally bred as a flock guard Dog. There are no specific dates on when was the time in which these Dogs were bred for the first time but registries of their presence take us back to many centuries ago. The Caucasian Ovcharka Mountain Dog is native from the region of Armenia, Turkey, Georgia and Russia, all countries in which extreme climates required strong and large Dogs.
The Caucasian Ovcharka Mountain Dog was bred as a guard Dog for local farmers who needed protection from wild intruders. Thanks to their efficiency and to the great results acquired in such task, the Caucasian Ovcharka Mountain Dog was quickly adopted by aristocrats and nobility in many different regions of Europe and Asia.
One funny fact about this Dog's History tells us the story that it wasn't until the Berlin Wall had disappeared that this breed became known in the Western World. These Dogs remained a secret to West Europe and America since there were no many specimens and the lack of communication between the two sides of the wall could not contribute to such contact. Still, the Caucasian Ovcharka does not count with the official recognition of the AKC.
