Bulldogs are always highly prized for their strenght, bravery, courage and strong but loyal temperament. All of these elements are present of course in the wonderful Catahoula Bulldog. This amazing dog is not a purebred dog but instead a hybrid or mixture. Experts sustain that the dog breeds that have contributed to the formation of the Catahoula Bulldog are on one hand the Catahoula Leopard Dog or Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog and the American Bulldog on the other. This combination has to do with the possibility of creating a super strong and well natured dog that shows a mind of its own. Litters can be produced of 50% of each breed or vary in 25 and 75 % of each one.
Native from the United States, this dog become of great use for local farmer in the south of the country since it helped with guard tasks but also as a responsible and trustable herding dog. It was also used to keep bears away from sheep and cattle. Its company has been there for over one hundred years but it wasn't until the decade of 1950 when it started gaining popularity and its own registration through the Animal Research Foundation.
As both breeds that have played parts in its creation, the Catahoula Bulldog is a medium sized dog which can measure between 24 and 26 inches tall and weight between 75 to 100 pounds. Of course, it displays a very muscular body which is also compact and square shaped. The legs are slim but really strong as well as the feet. The head is broad and the ears are softly folded over the head. The eyes are of a marvelous expression and feature an almond shape of great beauty. The Catahoula Bulldog can suffer from heterochromia, which means that its eyes can show two different colors, usually among brown, blue, green, gold and amber varieties. As for the nose, it is always black and the muzzle is really strong.
The coat of the Catahoula Bulldog is short and smooth to the touch. This coat does not require major grooming attention and it can be found in many different colors although fawn, brindle, black and brown are common types. This coat is described for many as a tight skin which sometimes make the dog look hairless. The tail is long and can display a slight curving towards the end.
As for the temperament of the Catahoula Bulldog, we should say that this dog is considered to be one fabulous companion and loyal friend. They are easily used to their masters and love the company of the family. Sometimes, these wonderful creatures can become over protective and jealous of new animals or strangers. To solve this problem, it is always a good idea to socialize them with animals and people as early as possible. They are also fabulous guardian dogs although to achieve the best results you will need to recur to firm and constant training. They are quite calm dogs in general terms.
