Just like its name tells us, the Canaan dog is native from the homonymous region in which it was originally bred near the mid twentieth century. It was a result of the proper taming of wild dogs that existed in the area which were used from then on as working dogs, watchdogs and helpers for many different activities. Although they have been officially recognized for a small period of time, antecesors of this breed are believed to have existed for thousands of years in the region. They feature the proper recognition of the AKC, the CKC, the FCI, the NKC, the APRI, the ACR and many others.
The Canaan Dog is certainly one of a kind. We are talking about a medium sized dog that displays a truly healthy system and almost no signs of complications. This dog is square shaped and features a strong neck and strong legs. The tail is bushy and slightly curved. The head is long and pointy while the muzzle is truly strong and square shaped as well. The V- shaped ears are always erected and the eyes are dark and really expressive. As for its coat, the Canaan Dog is short and harsh and can be found in solid colors (such as white, black, brown, brindle and others) as well as in a combination of white and black or brown.
The temperament of the Canaan Dog is definitely interesting. This is a hard working dog that can easily become your best companion and friend. They feature an independent behavior but a docile and obedient attitude towards their masters. They are deeply intelligent dogs really easy to train. The Canaan Dog is also really protective and loyal and even though they can become great family pets, they should be supervised when left alone with other dogs. They will only do great in apartment if provided with the proper amount of exercise.
