The Brussels Griffon breed has been here with us for quite some time. It is believed that this breed's first specimens appeared in the seventeenth century in the city of Brussels, Belgium. It was not until 1880 that it was officially presented at a dog exhibition. Currently the Brussels Griffon breed counts with recognition from the CKC, the AKC, the FCI, the UKC, the KCGB, the APRI, the ACR, the ANKC and others. There are some varieties of this breed: the Belgian Griffon and the Petit Brabancon. Neither of them is recognized by the AKC.
The appearance of the Brussels Griffon is clearly determined by its size and by its coat. We are talking about a small toy dog that usually measures seven to eight inches long and weights between six to twelve pounds. Its body is sturdy and features a clear rectangular shape. Its head is broad and stands out from the rest of the body because of its size but also because it is covered with longer hair than the body. As for the coat, it is quite dense and harsh to the touch. In most cases, the coat requires permanent grooming in order to prevent skin or hair complications. The colors of the coat are usually black and tan. The life expectancy of these dogs can easily reach fifteen years.
