Names can always be taken into account to learn about a dog breeds history and in this sense the case of the Brittany is quite clear. Although many may consider to be of British descent, the Brittany is native from the homonymous province in France in which it was believed to be born after experimental breedings with both Orange and White Setter specimens. It is a nineteenth century dog that was related to the aristocracy and to its hunting activities. The Brittany or Brittany Spaniel is currently recognized by the AKC, the UKC, the KCGB, the CKC, the FCI and others.
As a medium sized dog, the Brittany features the following measurements: 17 to 21 inches tall and 35 to 40 pounds of weight. It is an elegant breed that features a unique bearing and a silky coat that covers the entire body of the animal. This coat is available in five accepted colors: orange and white, liver tri-color, liver and white, black tri-color and black and white. The head of the Brittany is well proportioned while there is a noticeable stop and a square shaped muzzle. The ears are pendant and the eyes are large and transparent. The nose may be black but not always. Finally, the legs are really strong and allow the dog to move with agility.
The temperament of this dog is clearly determined by its hunting attitude. It is an extremely intelligent and curious dog that enjoys exercise and permanent activities. These dogs are also happy and loyal to their masters, being able to build really strong bonds of affection with its family. They require strong leadership because their instinct teaches them to follow one so its better be you. They can be good with children but never leave them alone with other animals unless they are properly socialized.
