Counting with an exceptional name, the Bouvier Des Flandres features a rich history that does not allow us to determine whether if it is native from France or from Belgium. Experts sustain that this breed is the result of matings in which breeds like the Griffon and the Beauceron were included. This marvelous herding dog was obviously created as an alternative that was meant to fulfill different cattle related tasks in the mentioned regions. After different moments in which the breed became almost extinct, nowadays it counts with official recognition of top level associations and although it remains a rare breed, more and more breeders are devoted to its production.
Regular measurements for the Bouvier Des Flandres are 23 to 28 inches tall and 75 to 90 pounds of weight which transform this dog in a medium to large sized animal. It displays a quite impressive bearing with long and sturdy legs and a muscular body. The abdomen is slightly tucked in and the head is massive, usually standing out from the rest of the body. The entire body of this dog is covered in an abundant and wavy coat that also gets to form brusy eyebrows and beard. Colors are varied: black, gray, brindle, blonde, fawn and others. The ears are important and erect while the nose is always black and the eyes round and dark.
As most herding dogs, the Bouvier Des Flandres features a highly active and playful temperament. They require lots of exercise and attention. They are gentle and noble dogs that respect their masters through and through. They are brave and fabulous watchdogs even when not taught to be so. These dogs also require a firm training and a strong leadership and should also count with early socialization if children and other animals are present in the family.
