As most herding dogs, the Border Collie displays a unique combination of hard working and loyal attitudes. This dog is without a doubt an outstanding creature that has too much to give and little to ask. The origins of this breed should be placed in England and Scotland when it was born after experimental mating of other herding breeds. It immediately became popular in many countries of Europe and was later exported to America. The AKC, the UKC, the CKC, the FCI and tons of other associations recognize it as an official breed.
The Border Collie is a medium sized dog that features measurements such as 19 to 22 inches tall and 30 to 45 pounds of weight. Counting with a life expectancy of between twelve and fifteen years, this dog is not recommended for apartment life due to its active and energetic attitude. The body of the Border Collie is square shaped and somewhat narrow. The legs are strong as so is the neck. The ears are V-shaped and usually carried erected. The eyes are oval and truly expressive while the muzzle is strong and pointy. The coat of the Border Collie is really beautiful: long, smooth to the touch and really glossy. It covers the entire body of the dog and can be found in black and white, tri-color, red and white, gray and solid black colors.
The temperament of the Border Collie is extremely obedient, hard working and active. These are really intelligent dogs that will make of the training a marvelous experience. They require lots of exercise and they will always enjoy human company. However, they can sometimes be aggressive towards small animals if not properly socialized. As most herding breeds, the Border Collie requires a strong and firm leader. They are great family dogs and companions.
