The Belgian Shepherd Dog Temperament is one that is often cited as being the most sought after. Kind and considerate, loyal and extremely sociable, they make both fantastic family Dogs and extraordinary working Dogs.
Belgian Shepherds are renowned for their high intelligence and regarded as one of the most intelligent breeds of domestic Dog. They require constant stimulation to ensure they do not become bored and develop a form of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (for example, excessive licking) and are therefore very easy to train. They enjoy training in a variety of different areas, especially where it involves the Dog releasing a lot of energy.
As a working Dog, they excel in many different fields. Their most popular use as a working Dog however has been as a herding Dog, for which they were originally bred for.
Many Belgian Shepherd owners do not realise that unlike some Dogs, Belgian Shepherds do not like to be left alone for any length of time. They become distressed when they are being ignored - whether intentional or not - and this constant need for attention must be noted when bringing a Belgian Shepherd into a home.
