Belgian Shepherd Dog History

Interesting and intriguing, Belgian Shepherd Dog History can be traced back several centuries. With four original local variations of the breed, the Belgian Shepherd Dog we know today was originally called the Groenendael.

Like all Belgian Shepherd breeds, the Groenendael was a working farm Dog, expected to not only herd cattle but also guard the land and property of its owner. With only minor differences in temperament, this breed differed from the others due its long, black coat.

In 1910, the breed had gained a great reputation as use as a police Dog in the Western world and several were already employed full time in this capacity within America.

It was throughout World War I and World War II that Belgian Shepherd Dogs captured the attention of the public. After the wars had ended, the Belgian Shepherds enjoyed an increase in popularity with the public and many working Dogs were re-homed as family Dogs.

With their shimmering black coat, they are the most striking of the Belgian breeds. This characteristic, along with their versatile abilities, has won them many faithful supporters throughout their History.
