Bearded InformationIf you are planning to get one Bearded Collie or even if you don’t really know them but feel curious, please read this article and give this breed a chance. You will be amazed to see how much these beautiful dogs can offer you. Before we start describing this amazing breed, it might be useful to search for a little of its history and origin. It is believed that this breed, of Polish origin, was first introduced in Western Europe through a Polish merchant who left a couple of specimens in Scotland around 1500 when trading other products. It is probable that this few dogs melted with local ones and therefore gave birth to what it is nowadays known as the Bearded Collie breed. This breed has almost disappeared since it was originally bred for herding or shepherding and since this activity has declined. But in the beginning and ending of the XX century some intelligent breeders have worked to increase the number of specimens alive and avoid in this way the breed’s complete disappearance. If we have to talk about this breed’s physical features, we must mention the coat since its quite distinctive. These dogs wear a long and soft coat which is complemented with a thick undercoat. This coat needs constant and daily grooming to avoid hair knots and mats. Its color changes along the dog’s life: the puppy might be born in colors such as brown, black, fawn or even blue. It may have white markings but they should be placed evenly in the whole body. The coat tends to fall to sides and should be cut often to avoid dirt and other problems. As the animal grows, the color lightens up and then darkens again when old. In terms of the body structure, this is catalogued as a medium sized dog, robust but not heavy. The length of the body should go from 20 to 22 inches and the weight from 40 to 60 pounds. The head is quite broad and the ears fall at its sides, while eyes tend to be wide as well and a bit separated one from another. They should match the hair color. Some of the health issues this breed suffers are hip dysplasia or hair problems, but these are quite easy to attend in comparison with other breeds health conditions. In terms of temperament, the Bearded Collie is able to become a great friend or an excellent working companion depending on your needs. |
