Considered to be one of the most popular and chosen breeds of all, the Beagle is a beautiful, small and tender dog that enjoys the company of a loving and caring family. The Beagle is a perfect breed for apartments and even though we may think we know all about this dog, the truth is that there is many interesting details to take into account.
The history of the Beagle is not entirely clear although we can assure that it was originally bred in England as a hound dog that could be of great use to keep rats and other small animals away from crops. The Beagle has also been used by nobility as an excellent hunting dog. Nowadays, most of those activities have given place to companionship spaces although this breed is normally used in narcotics detection as well. This breed is recognized by the AKC, the UKC, the CKC, the FCI, the KCGB and some others.
As for its appearance, the Beagle is considered to be a small dog. It features a square shaped body with short but strong legs and a well proportioned head. The ears fall to the sides of the head and the eyes are round and dark, with a truly incredible expression. Of course, the Beagle features a highly developed sense of smell and the nose is black and important.
The temperament of the breed is generally determined by its strong character but also by its loving and affectionate attitude towards its owners. The Beagle is a curious, alert and active dog that enjoys exercise and outdoor activities. They are great family pets but require full attention when left alone with other animals, specially small pets. Finally, they are quite independent dogs that enjoy exploring the surroundings and should therefore be controlled. Their life expectancy goes from twelve from fifteen years.
