In some ways, Beagle Agility is well suited to the breed. However, in many other ways Beagles simply do not excel in this field.
The Beagle is a very fast energetic breed of dog, built for hunting and chasing small animals. However, due to their independent nature, Beagles enjoy thinking for themselves, which may cause problems when trying to follow instructions in an Agility competition. For example, dog Agility is a fast sport in which dogs are expected to jump and climb over obstacles, run through tunnels and complete weave poles. Beagles can succeed effectively in a number of these tasks, however if the Beagle decides to ignore their owner, it is very difficult to regain control of the Beagle until the competition has finished.
Many Beagle owners train there Beagles for several years before entering them into an Agility course competition. This training begins when the Beagle is a puppy and continues throughout the early years to ensure the dog's obedience skills are perfect. If carried out effectively - and in some cases, with professional advice - Beagle's can be a perfect dog for competing in Agility based dog competitions.
