Falling into the medium Size breed category, Australian Shepherd Size varies depending on the individual breed. However, male Australian Shepherd's are generally between 20 to 23 inches at the withers on average, with females being slightly shorter at approximately 18 to 21 inches.
Although only a medium sized dog, their temperament is that of a fearless, much larger breed. Australian Shepherd's very rarely cower or back down when challenged by a larger animal.
The Australian Shepherd is a very energetic breed of dog and requires a lot of regular exercise. Daily exercise is a key point to an Australian Shepherd succeeding in reaching its potential height and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Whilst regular exercise aids with healthy growth, helping the dog's bones to grow stronger and increase muscle mass, a well balanced, nutritional diet is also a key factor in helping the breed to achieve its optimum Size. Though many Australian Shepherd owners feed their dog on a high quality wet dog food and kibble, most breed experts believe the best diet an Australian Shepherd can have is that of fresh, organic products such as meat and vegetables.
