As one of the most important dog breeds born in Australia, the Australian Cattle Dog is certainly one marvelous animal. This dog is also known as the Blue Heeler for its amazing and loyal temperament. Its history can take us back to the nineteenth century in Australia, where it was bred mainly for rural purposes. Its major activity was to control the Cattle and to protect it from wild animals. There are many dogs that contributed to the formation of this breed and among them we must mention the Old Smooth Collie, the Australian Kelpie, the Dalmatian and the Bull Terrier. This breed is officially recognized by the AKC, the FCI, the CKC, the UKC and the KCGB among others.

The Australian Cattle features a sturdy, compact and square shaped body. The tail long and fully covered in hair while the head is broad and ends in square muzzle as well. The legs are short but strong and the ears are V- shaped and erect. The eyes of the Australian Cattle are truly expressive and oval shaped, usually in dark brown tones. As for its coat, it is thick and short. It is highly protective and weather resistant. It is available in blue or red colorations. Usual measurements for this breed are 17 to 20 inches tall and 32 to 40 pounds of weight. The lifespan of these dogs goes from twelve to fifteen years.

These dogs feature a truly active and playful behavior. They are not meant to be left alone or tied for too much time. They are also brave and can easily display a protective and loyal attitude, becoming therefore fabulous watchdogs. If not handled with a firm leadership, the Australian Cattle dog can become aggressive and destructive. They are not recommended in case you have other animals since they can get to be really territorial and suspicious.
