Just like its name says it, the Anatolian dog was born in the region of Asia Minor hundreds of years ago. There it served as a shepherd dog as well as a guard and companion canine of great use for local farmers. This unique dog certainly features a marvelous and impressive bearing which can easily call the attention in a positive way. Experts recommend it as a family pet but certainly suggest strong and firm leadership.
Recognized by many important dog associations among which the AKC is to be found, the Anatolian Shepherd Dog is a large creature whose average measurements go from 100 to 150 pounds of weight and 28 to 30 inches tall. It features a square shaped body as well as broad head and a strong muzzle. Inspite of this muscular and sturdy body, the Anatolian is quite agile and can move quickly when required. The neck is also quite strong and the tail is long and fully covered in abundant hair. As for its coat, the Anatolian displays a short and soft type of hair available in a variety of colors. The ears are folded over the head and the eyes happen to be really expressive.
The temperament of the Anatolian is similar to the one of any Shepherd dog. We are talking of highly loyal and hard working dogs that also show a deep intelligence and a protective attitude. They are affectionate and loving but of course, due to their size, strangers, other animals and children should be presented carefully. Preferably, these dogs should be socialized to them when puppies. Even though the Anatolian is not an aggressive or dangerous dog, it should always count with a firm and strong owner that can set the boundaries clearly.
Usually, the Anatolian features a lifespan of around twelve to fifteen years and some recurrent health conditions are hip dysplasia, eyelid entropion and the slow development of a strong immunity system.
