It is believed that the American Hairless Terrier breed was accidentally originated in the seventies in the state of Louisiana after the birth of regular Rat Terriers. Nowadays, the breed is recognized by many important associations such as the UKC, the CKC, the APRI, the ACR and others, but not by the AKC. Many of these associations consider the American Hairless Terrier a variety of the Rat Terrier breed.

Living between fourteen and sixteen years, the American Hairless Terrier is a medium sized dog that can weights up to sixteen pounds and measure up to sixteen inches. They are very similar to the Rat Terriers in terms of appearance. They feature a built and compact body with an important neck and small head. The ears are erected and the tail is thin and Hairless. Of course, this type of dog does not have a coat so we can directly see its skin: it is normally of pink, gray or black color with certain markings or red spots. Still, these dogs carry whiskers and eyebrows and even though puppies tend to be born with a fuzzy layer of hair, they eventually lose it as they grow up.

The temperament of the American Hairless Terrier is quite active and playful. These dogs are very curious and dynamic so they will require a certain level of exercise a day if kept in apartments. They are loyal to their masters and can easily get along quite well with children. Early socialization is in this sense essential to obtain the best results. Since they don't have any grooming requirements they are a perfect option for allergic people or children.
