The Akita Inu is a breed originated in the Japanese province of Honshu, in its inner district of Akita, from where it takes on its name. The word Inu means “dog” but it is not always said when people refer to this breed. It is today considered the national dog breed of Japan. The main purposes for which this breed was brought up refer to the imperial era, and this is because these dogs fulfilled the role of imperial guardian alongside with soldiers.
They were also used as hunters and security jobs. Traditionally, Japanese people used to believe they had spiritual and magical properties and even today they are seen as healers.
In terms of physical features, the Akita Inu is a large dog, being these his measures: 24 to 28 inches tall and 75 to 120 pounds of weight. As many other Japanese breeds, the most distinctive body characteristics are a squared and strong built body, with broad legs and a large head. The tail is always curved on top of the body and the ears are v-shaped and erected. The eyes are small in comparison with the rest of the features of the face, and should always be of dark color and triangular shape.
The neck of these dogs is quite strong and broad, much more in comparison to other Japanese dog breeds (this is perhaps the sturdiest breed of all of them). The Akita Inu is a double coated dog, being the undercoat very thick and dense while the superficial one is harsh to the touch and straight. This coat protects the body and this is why these animals are great for extreme cold weathers. The coat should be white, brindle or brown colored and it should also be brilliant. Akita Inu dogs tend to suffer from skin allergies, hip dysplasia, thyroid complications and knee or articulation problems.
Akitas have protective tendencies so this is why they make perfect guard dogs but can also be used around children and large families. Aggression is however probable with other dogs and pets and they should always be supervised in this sense. They are obedient to their master but need to be taught and socialized since they are puppies. Firm and constant training will make them a must have at home if you are willing to protect the ones you love and your property.
