Airedale Terrier

Airedale Terriers are those big and brownish dogs that have a dense and curly coat covering all of their body and that also have an alert but still gentle and friendly expression. This is a super interesting breed to know so if you want, you are invited to keep on reading and discover lots of other things about Airedale breed Terriers.

This Terrier breed was originated in the nineteenth century in the British county of York where it was used for hunting tasks as any other Terrier breed. They were also used as police dogs in the beginnings of the twentieth century and especially in World War II. Traditionally they covered different work activities like guardian dogs, hunting, rescuing, tracking lost persons, and many others, activities that last till the actual days. They are also used as company dogs nowadays.

The Airedale Terrier is known as the “King of Terriers” because it is the biggest of all of them and has a strong and majestic appearance. They are categorized as large dogs. This dog’s height should be located among 22 to 24 inches and weight between 40 to 60 pounds. The head should be long and somewhat narrow. The body is highly leveled with a squared shape and because of this feature the Airedale appears quite elegant and stylized. Ears are v-shaped and folded at the very top of the skull, totally covered in hair. Eyes are always dark and small but still very expressive as any other Terrier. The tail is short and always should be held height to complete the dog’s body line.

The Airedale Terrier coat is probably one of his most recognizable features: this coat is extremely wiry, dense and somewhat to the touch, while the undercoat is softer. Coat colors tend to be light brown or tan and black on the top of the dog’s body. White markings on the chest are allowed. Airedale Terrier won’t cause you too much problems regarding health issues since they are quite healthy, but from time to time they may suffer hip dysphasia, skin allergies, dryness or infections. Grooming his coat and making sure that he gets a balanced diet will prevent these complications from happening.

Airedale Terrier has strong temperament and independent personalities. They will get on well with children if you take the time to make socialization pretty early since they can get a bit aggressive or inpatient towards children or any other animals. Strangers will look suspicious to them if you don’t train them to behave correctly. They are extremely intelligent and affectionate to their owners, they respect authority and training them will be an easy and pleasant thing to do. They can even reach higher levels of training that other dog breeds don’t.

They can become protective or even jealous and they need constant playing, exercising and human contact since they are loyal towards their masters. Providing them with a good yard or patio and avoiding isolation for long periods of time are proper things to do since these dogs are not good apartment dogs.

This is just the basic information about this dog breed, but Airedale Terrier is absolutely amazing and by having one at home you will definitely learn a lot. Love, hard work and affection will always be guaranteed with one of these around
