When teenage horror films were at their peak after the success of Scream and all its sequels, Dimension Films released a movie that took the same subject, that had all the same characters and that was set in the same places, with only one difference: instead of killing the characters, the main purpose of this movie was to kill the audiences… of laughter! Yes, as you have surely guessed we are talking about the Scary Movie saga, a bunch of movies that are exclusively made to mock and satirize horror movies, all their clichés and common places.
The main object of irony in the Scary Movie saga has probably been the Scream movies, but as sequels went by, more and more horror movies were criticized and satirized, transforming these films in a sum of crazy stories that are related in some crazy way with each other, creating therefore a super absurd and hilarious reality.
In this second part of the saga, we find lots of references to different classic horror movies and the scenes that are famous from those movies are portrayed in an ironical way, apart from being taken to the extreme. The underlying idea is that horror movies tend to be exaggerated, and unreal, so the intention is to make them look even more unrealistic and absurd. But the best of all is that in the Scary Movie saga we will not only find parodies to horror films, but also to films of other genres that are considered classics and that may have exaggerated scenes that can also become hilarious.
The movie also recurs to famous stars such as James Woods, Tim Curry, Tori Spelling or Andy Richter to make the plot even juicer. It is believed that even Marlon Brando was considered for a role in the movie, but had to decline due to an illness. The participation of Brando would surely have marked the movie’s success.
Among the parodies we find references to movies such as The Exorcist, The Shining, The Haunting, Hannibal, Poltergeist, Casper, Mission Impossible II, Titanic, Charlie’s Angels, Dude, where is my car?, Friday the 13th, Twister, Cast Away, What Lies Beneath, Dirty Harry, A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Changeling, Rose Red and many others. This situation allows the movie to have a crazy and incoherent storyline, making it even funnier.
